Market Report 1 March 2022
Cattle– 573
Numbers reduced to a little over half of last week's offering. Cow offerings were back by a third of the previous week's penning. Recent rain events led to restricted buyer competition, especially from processors and feeders North of the border, along with some chillers to capacity. Not withstanding feeder competition was strong with medium feeders firm to a shade cheaper. The better bred feeders sold to dearer trends. Heavy feeders sold to significantly dearer trends. The very light weight drafts were cheaper by 27c, light weight backgrounders were up to 14c/kg better. Feeder heifers followed the same path, medium and heavy heifers were 11c to 24c/kg better. A draft of plainer, light weight processor heifers sold to 450c/kg. No numbers of grown steers to quote, grown heifer to 3c/kg back. A good quality offering of cows saw little change with 4 score drafts firm to 1c/kg better. Light weight bulls to feed on sold to dearer trends, the heavy processing bulls, were back in price considerably. A pen of young cows and calves sold to $2,940/unit.

Sheep
Yarding– 3951 Lambs–2000 Sheep– 1951
The first sale for three weeks yielded 2000 lambs and 1951 grown sheep. It was a large penning of Dorper store lambs including drafts of young ewe lambs. There were pens of well finished heavy lambs on offer with the market varying from slightly dearer for the lighter drafts to cheaper trends for the heavier lambs. All the regular operators were present as well as strong competition from restockers. Restockers competed on the limited drafts of new season lambs on a dearer basis. Light Dorper lambs sold to restockers ranging $70 to $146/head. Heavier drafts of restocker Dorpers sold to a dearer trend on three weeks ago. Trade lambs sold to dearer trends however, as the weight increased the trends slipped. Lambs in excess of 30kgs cwt made from $227 to $250/head. A special draft of well finished lambs were offered and sold courtesy of local producers, to a variety of processors with the proceeds to benefit the Westpac Helicopter Service. These Lambs sold from $280 to $580/head. Hoggets sold to 192/head. Light cross bred ewes $85 to $146/head with the heavy drafts of Dorpers and crossbreds selling from $165 to $170/head. Heavy wethers sold to $192/head. Young Merino ewes sold to $196/head, crossbreds to $165/head and young Dorper ewe lambs to $146 all secured by restockers.
