Market Report 17 August 2021

17th Aug 2021

Cattle– 739

Numbers were similar with a few more cows offered. It was a mixed quality offering with plainer conditioned cattle penned. There were drafts of Bos Indicus cattle on offer, as well as well bred drafts of weaner and yearling cattle to suit restockers. An extra cow buyer attended and put a floor in the heavy cow market. Demand was strong on feeder and restocker cattle. Restockers were competitive through the young cattle with weaners steers selling to 774c/kg. The heifer portion sold to 762c/kg. Sections of the yearling steer market saw significant rises, although some of the plainer drafts sold to cheaper trends. Feeder heifers were dearer for both light and medium weight drafts. However the heavy lines sold to a cheaper trend of 7c/kg. Light weight classes to restockers were 14c/kg better. Grown steers and heifers sold to a dearer market for the well finished articles, the plainer types not so much. Medium weight cows were slightly cheaper. The heavy weight cows sold up to 8c/kg better topping at 374c/kg. Bulls to processors made to 325c/kg.

Sheep

Yarding– 1465                Lambs– 1384                               Sheep–81

Numbers reduced significantly with advent of lockdown and temporary closure of a major exporter. There was still a very good offering of heavy lambs, but not many sheep. All the regular buyers attended. Trade lambs sold to slightly cheaper trends while the heavier drafts sold to $3/head better. There was no change for the heavy trade drafts. Heavy lambs weighing 26 to 30kg cwt were back $7, making a top of $235/head. Lambs in excess of 30kg cwt saw a rise of $7, topping at $270/head. There were only 81 grown sheep penned so a quote would not be reliable.
