Market Report 17 July
Cattle– 1540
The dry weather and a continuation of frosts saw cow numbers double, as well as a penning of early weaned calves. There was a good selection of yearling cattle, although quality was found to be lacking in the young cattle section. An extra feeder order returned after an absence and feeder competition was also present through the lighter conditioned cow penning. Restockers were competitive on the early weaned calves, although overall trends were slightly cheaper. Weaner steers saw a cheaper trend of 4c to 9c/kg, but a quality variation was a major contributor. The plainer conditioned heifer weaners also saw cheaper trends of 27c, while trade veal experienced a 5c/kg decline. Light yearling steers sold to dearer trends of 20c/kg, again quality was a major factor. Light yearling heifers saw rises in the feeder offering. Grown steers were cheaper by 12c/kg, however weight and quality eased on the previous week. The best of the grown heifers saw rises of 6c/kg for the heavier, well finished drafts. Light one score cows saw both restocker and feeder competition, selling from 117c to 175c/kg. Two score cows saw rises of 7c/kg. Heavy, grain assisted cows sold to dearer trends of 12c/kg, as did the best of the heavy bulls.
