Market Report 19 March
Cattle-
Yarding– 1100
Useful rain in the north of the state saw numbers reduce again this week, for a yarding of 1,100 head, a reduction of 360. The main reduction was in the yearling cattle and a few less weaners. Quality of the young cattle was very mixed, with several pens of well bred steers and heifers through the sale, however there was also a fair number of plain conditioned cattle offered. There were limited numbers of yearlings and vealers suitable for processing. Competition was much stronger, with restocker weaner steers selling 40c dearer, topping at 230c, as weaner heifers sold to 180c, gaining 30c/kg. Restocker and background steers were up by 20c to 30c, reaching a top of 286c, while medium weight feeder steers were up to 60c dearer, making to 275c for an average of 246c/kg. Feeder heifers gained 20c to 25c, topping at 220c/kg. The yarding of export cattle consisted mainly of cows, with only an odd grown steer and a few pens of grown heifers. Grown steers sold to 253c and heifers made to 208c/kg. The yarding of cows consisted of several pens of 3 and 4 score medium and heavy weights, however the largest percentage of cows sold were plain conditioned 1 and 2 scores. The market was very strong compared to last week’s sale, helped by an extra buyer entering the market that boosted prices up. Most cows sold from 30c to 50c dearer, with light 1 and 2 scores making from 96c to 126c, while 2 score medium weights averaged 171c/kg. 3 score medium weight cows averaged 183c, while heavy cows sold to a top of 206c/kg

Sheep-
Yarding– 2688 Lambs– 1242 Sheep– 1446
There was only half the number of sheep yarded, of which there was a yarding of 1,242 lambs. The good supply of lambs consisted of trade weights under 24kg, although there was a good run of heavy lambs over 24kg. Quality was mixed with a fair number of light weight 2 and 3 score lambs offered that went mainly to southern restockers, however there was several consignments of well finished lambs that were supplementary fed. All the usual buyers operated in a firm market with southern orders for light restocker lambs helping to keep the light end of the lamb prices up. Processors were active keeping the well finished lamb market stable at recent rates. Heavy lambs over 30kg cwt sold to a top of $210 and hoggets sold to $130/head. The yarding of mutton consisted mainly of ewes, along with several pens of wethers. Some sheep were carrying a good skin in a fairly mixed offering of mutton. Competition was strong which was in line with recent sales. The top price of the sale was for a line of Dorper ewes at $164/head.
