Market Report 25 January 2022

25th Jan 2022

Cattle– 525

Numbers reduced to offer a mixed quality penning of mostly yearling cattle and a limited number of cows. Through the market were well bred pens of heifers in particular and these sold to strong trends back to restockers. The steer portion of this offering sold well to feeders. The balance of the penning sold to varying trends with quality contributing, but a general improvement on last week's declining market. Not all processors attended, one exporter returning after an absence. Other feeder operators and backgrounders were competitive. No weaner penning to quote, very light weight yearling steers were slightly cheaper, with light weight steers showing no changes in price. A large offering of medium weight steers sold to an increase of 12c/kg. Heavy weight feeder steers sold to a cheaper trend, with very heavy steers through that draft contributing to the price correction. Light weight well bred heifers sold to a significant rise to restockers, light feeders to 10c/kg better. Heavy feeder heifers sold to a much dearer trends. There were no grown processor steers to quote, the heifer portion back in price by 15c/kg. Heavy weight cows sold to a significant rise, up 20c/kg to 26c/kg. Light weight plain condition bulls to feed to 337c/kg, and heavy weight bulls back 12c/kg. Cows and calves $2530 to $3250 per/unit, and a draft of joined heifers to $2060 per/head.

Sheep

Yarding– 750                 Lambs–619                    Sheep– 131

Numbers were similar with a good quality penning of 619 lambs and 131 grown sheep. Included in the sheep numbers was a draft of Australia White ewes as well as rams due to the dispersal of a Australia White flock. While there were no great numbers restockers were very competitive securing the dispersal sheep on sale. Processors were  not all represented. The trends were mixed with drafts of the trade lambs in good demand the heavy drafts not so much. Some trade lamb trends were cheaper, crossbred lambs witnessed up to a $7/head improvement. Heavy trades sold to similar trends of two weeks ago while heavy lambs were $13 dearer and heavier types up to $6/head cheaper. Hoggets improved by up to $18/head. There were a few more heavy sheep penned the top end  selling from$150 to $160/head. Young Australia White ewes sold from $250 to $395/head with the rams to $1020/head.
