Market Report 4 September
Cattle-
Yarding– 800
Numbers almost doubled, with young cattle and cows well supplied. There were also greater numbers of young calves taken off cows. Limited numbers of grown cattle were available. The quality of the offering was fair to good and there were a few pens of crop fed cattle showing varying degrees of finish. The usual buyers attended, along with extra restocker and feedlot activity. This increased activity was boosted by rainfall, which increased confidence. Market trends through the young cattle were generally dearer, however there were some quality related price changes in the negative. A few of the calves were sold on a live weight basis, while the lighter weights sold on dollars per head. Heifer vealers to restockers were cheaper, with most of the decrease being quality related. Light weight yearling steers to restock and feed sold to a dearer trend of 2c to 24c/kg, with the heavier end attracting the greatest improvement. Medium and heavy feeder steers experienced similar gains. The increased competition from feedlotters saw yearling heifers record strong gains, similar to those of the steer portion. Well finished heifers to the trade were also dearer. There were too few heavy grown steers of any quality to quote a market trend. Well finished grown heifers displaying permanent teeth sold to a dearer trend, up 24c/kg. There were cheaper trends through the cow market, with quality variations due to the greater numbers. Overall, the trend was 10c/kg cheaper and there was not a lot of change on the top end of the bull market

Sheep-
Yarding–2100 Lambs– 1680 Sheep–420
There was a reduced penning in both the sheep and lambs. The penning included around 450 Dorpers. The number of new season lambs showed an increase. The quality was fairly mixed and included a good supply of well finished trade and heavy weights along with a single pen of extra heavy weight Dorpers. The usual buyers were in attendance along with an extra lamb buyer. It was a strong market with demand for all classes high. This resulted in all classes showing significant price improvement on the previous sale. This being in line with what has been happening in most other markets. There was also an increase in weights available, most noticeable in the heavy and extra heavy weight classes. The low number of sheep penned sold to a slightly cheaper trend for the most part. The standout sale was a pen of medium weight Merino wethers carrying close to a full skin.
