Market Report 6 April 2021

6th Apr 2021

Cattle– 244

Numbers reduced by well under half for the post Easter sale. All categories were affected, however a strong restocker panel pushed young cattle to dearer trends and the limited export gallery provided strong demand for the heavy cow offering. Restockers provided strong competition for light weight weaners and yearling cattle, with the addition of an extra operator. Light weight steer weaners rose in price as much as 49c/kg. Light weight heifers were only slightly dearer. Medium weight steers to feed experienced substantial rises, while backgrounder competition saw that category sell to strong trends. There was no change in the feeder heifer demand, with the heavy weights enjoying a rise in price of 27c/kg. The lack of quality and numbers caused a downward correction through the heavy grown steers, with the heifer portion turning the market around to be 15c/kg better for the limited number of heavy drafts. Heavy weight cows sold to strong competition, 3 score cows up by 18c, the 4 score drafts rising in price 5c/kg. No change in the heavy weight bull market.
